Binsar Retreat and Cottages

Description of cottage

The Binsar Retreat is situated on the land owned by major Edin and the property is locally known as Edinpur. It is situated at an altitude of 7600 feet on the south west flank of Binsar, deep in the core area of the sanctuary. Being a small property of little over a acre, its luxury tents gives the feeling of being in the forest meadow surrounded by the sounds and sights of the wilderness and at the same time of being at a great height with superb views of the Himalayas and the valleys as well as the ridges and ravines of binsar.

The name insar is actually a British distoration of Veeneshwar, one of the many names given to Lord Shiva. The Binsar Mahadev temple is unique in that it is situated at the centre of a mystical cross, with important Shiva and Devi temples exactly 14 kms due North, South, East, West of it. The forest of binsar has been sacred since ancient times, legend has it the Saptrishis meditated here and gave the name Satkhol to the part of the forest. The local deity Dans Golu is also said to reside in the forest to protect its denizens, he is said to appear as a white horseman who guides lost people and offers protection.

Accommodation and facilities

Binsar Retreat can be reached by road from Delhi, a ten hour drive via Moradabad, Rampur, Haldwani and Almora. It is also possible to take an overnight train from Delhi, Lucknow or Agra to Kathgodam and drive up from there in a taxi to Binsar, a journey of three and half hours. From the major tourist destinations of Nainital and Kausani, Binsar is a two hours drive. Although remote and not easily accessible, Binsar has become one of the best known off beat places in Uttarakhand and everyone who visits becomes enchanted and wants to return. It is truly one of the last bastions of unspoiled nature at her best in all seasons, from the crimson rhododendron blooms like flames on the forest from March to May, the mists and dramatic sunsets of the monsoon, the clarity of the air and unparalleled views of autumn, and the now in winter.

Visit the Panchachuli women weavers where over 700 village women engage in weaving pashmina shawls, tweeds, carpets, furnishings, lamb’s wool and natural fiber making.

About Binsar

Binsar, in ancient times the summer capital of Chand Kings who ruled Kumoun from 11th-18th centuries A.D. The popular Binsar wildlife century is situated here and was established in 1988 for the conservation and protection of broad leaf oak trees of Himalayan region and some endangered species of birds. The panoramic view of 300 km white snow covered Himalayas peaks like Kedarnath, Shivling, Trishul and Nanda Devi, Panchchuli can seen from here. Binsar is a beautiful, quiet and wild Himalayan destination with rich natural surroundings among dense forest of oak trees. From Binsar one can see the 300 km panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks like Kedarnath Peak, Shivling, Trisul and majestic Nanda Devi from a place called 'Zero Point'.

Binsar Location

Location: Binsar Wildlife Sanctuaryis located 35 km from Almora in the state of Uttaranchal. The total area is approx. 47.04 km2

Route to Binsar: It’s half an hour journey from Almora. Kathgodam is the nearest railhead, almost 126 km from Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. One can board the overnight train Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi railway station to reach Kathgodam. There are taxis available from Kathgodam to reach Binasar.

Khali Estate

Binsar has been an acclaimed hill resort of India. Binser is the trekkers paradise. There is an estate near Binsar called Khali estate, it was once the home of Sir Henry Ramsay, who was the commissioner of Kumaun from 1856 to 1884 and popularly called by British authors as 'King of Kumaun'. He also built his bungalow at Binsar.

Binsar Mahadev

There are two Binsar in Almora district. This Binsar is around 20 km from Ranikhet situated in the valley and nearly 70 km away from Almora city. It is located in a jungle and famous for temple of Lord Shiva. This temple is one of the holy destinations for Hindus. It is a beautiful place to visit. Binsar was named after this temple. This temple is dedicated to God Shiva. This temple is an excellent example of great architecture.

Binsar Sanctuary Museum

Binsar has a museum about the flora and fauna of the region and provide good and valuable information about the Sanctuary.

Kasar Devi Temple

Kasar Devi Temple is located at a distance of around 9 km from Binsar, it was the house for Dutch Monk from 1970 to early 80s. It is said that this temple was the house for the hippies and hippie culture got popular from here. This temple is still a major tourist attraction for the foreigners.
