The Binsar Retreat is situated on the land owned by major Edin and the property is locally known as Edinpur. It is situated at an altitude of 7600 feet on the south west flank of Binsar, deep in the core area of the sanctuary. Being a small property of little over a acre, its luxury tents gives the feeling of being in the forest meadow surrounded by the sounds and sights of the wilderness and at the same time of being at a great height with superb views of the Himalayas and the valleys as well as the ridges and ravines of binsar.
The name insar is actually a British distoration of Veeneshwar, one of the many names given to Lord Shiva. The Binsar Mahadev temple is unique in that it is situated at the centre of a mystical cross, with important Shiva and Devi temples exactly 14 kms due North, South, East, West of it. The forest of binsar has been sacred since ancient times, legend has it the Saptrishis meditated here and gave the name Satkhol to the part of the forest. The local deity Dans Golu is also said to reside in the forest to protect its denizens, he is said to appear as a white horseman who guides lost people and offers protection.
