Binsar Cottages

Binsar, in ancient times the summer capital of Chand Kings who ruled Kumoun from 11th-18th centuries A.D. Binsar Location

Location: Binsar Wildlife Sanctuaryis located 35 km from Almora in the state of Uttaranchal. The total area is approx. 47.04 km2

Route to Binsar: It’s half an hour journey from Almora. Kathgodam is the nearest railhead, almost 126 km from Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. One can board the overnight train Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi railway station to reach Kathgodam. There are taxis available from Kathgodam to reach Binasar.

Khali Estate

Binsar has been an acclaimed hill resort of India. Binser is the trekkers paradise. There is an estate near Binsar called Khali estate, it was once the home of Sir Henry Ramsay, who was the commissioner of Kumaun from 1856 to 1884 and popularly called by British authors as 'King of Kumaun'. He also built his bungalow at Binsar.

Binsar Mahadev

There are two Binsar in Almora district. This Binsar is around 20 km from Ranikhet situated in the valley and nearly 70 km away from Almora city. It is located in a jungle and famous for temple of Lord Shiva. This temple is one of the holy destinations for Hindus. It is a beautiful place to visit. Binsar was named after this temple. This temple is dedicated to God Shiva. This temple is an excellent example of great architecture.

The name insar is actually a British distoration of Veeneshwar, one of the many names given to Lord Shiva. The Binsar Mahadev temple is unique in that it is situated at the centre of a mystical cross, with important Shiva and Devi temples exactly 14 kms due North, South, East, West of it. The forest of binsar has been sacred since ancient times, legend has it the Saptrishis meditated here and gave the name Satkhol to the part of the forest. The local deity Dans Golu is also said to reside in the forest to protect its denizens, he is said to appear as a white horseman who guides lost people and offers protection.
